Beyond Compliance: New OHS Training Aims to Boost Manufacturer Productivity and Safety Culture

by | Jul 10, 2025 | Communication

KAMPALA, UGANDA – In a proactive move to strengthen workplace safety standards within the industrial sector, a transformative three-day Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) training workshop has been announced. The event will take place from July 30th to August 1st, 2025, at the UMA Multipurpose Hall, Lugogo UMA Show Grounds.

This intensive workshop is strategically designed for key personnel on the factory floor and in management, including HR Managers, Supervisors, and Safety and Production Managers. It aims to move beyond a checkbox approach to compliance, positioning robust OHS practices as a core driver of productivity, employee morale, and overall business resilience.

For manufacturers, investing in a strong safety culture is not an expense but a strategic imperative. The costs associated with workplace accidents—including medical expenses, compensation claims, production downtime, damaged equipment, and regulatory fines—can be devastating to a company’s bottom line and reputation.

The upcoming training will equip attendees with the essential skills to build a safer and more efficient workplace, focusing on three critical areas:

1. Proactive Hazard Identification and Risk Management: Participants will learn practical techniques to identify potential hazards within a manufacturing environment—from machine operation and chemical handling to ergonomics and electrical safety. This module focuses on proactive risk assessment and mitigation, enabling managers to address safety issues before they lead to costly accidents.

2. Implementing OHS Management Systems: The workshop will provide insights into developing and implementing structured OHS management systems, similar in principle to international standards like ISO 45001. This involves creating a holistic framework for setting safety policies, training staff, conducting regular audits, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement where every employee is a safety advocate.

3. Ensuring Ugandan Legal Compliance: A key focus of the training will be on navigating Uganda’s legal framework for workplace safety. Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of their obligations under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2006. This knowledge is crucial for ensuring compliance, avoiding significant legal penalties, and protecting the welfare of their workforce.

The Direct Link Between Safety and Profitability

A safe workplace is a productive workplace. By reducing accidents and improving employee well-being, manufacturers can expect to see tangible benefits, including:

  • Increased Productivity due to less downtime and fewer disruptions.
  • Higher Employee Morale and lower staff turnover rates.
  • Reduced Operational Costs related to accidents and insurance premiums.
  • Enhanced Brand Reputation among customers, investors, and potential employees.

This OHS training is a vital opportunity for manufacturers to invest in their most valuable asset—their people. By building a world-class safety culture, they not only protect their workforce but also secure a more productive and profitable future for their organization.
