UMA & URA Collaborate to Empower Businesses Through Tax Education Clinics

by | May 23, 2023 | Communication

In an effort to promote tax compliance, increase business knowledge, and streamline taxation processes, and resolve members’ issues related to tax administration, the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) partnered with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to organize a series of countrywide tax education clinics from 25th April to 23rd May, 2023.

The tax clinics aimed to provide sensitization and hands-on training on various tax-related topics. They also sought to equip businesses across the Eastern, Northern, Western, and Central parts of Uganda with the necessary knowledge to navigate the complexities of taxation effectively.

Participants received in-depth training on various topics, including the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System (EFRIS), Value Added Tax (VAT), Withholding Tax, Import Duty, Letters of Origin, Digital Tax Stamp, and the filing of returns. This comprehensive coverage ensured that participants gained insights into crucial aspects of tax compliance that directly impact their operations.

A focal point of the tax education clinics was the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System (EFRIS). Participants received hands-on training on this digital platform, which has been introduced to enhance transparency and efficiency in the invoicing and receipting process. Practical demonstrations and interactive sessions guided participants on utilizing EFRIS effectively, ensuring accurate record-keeping and simplifying tax audits.

Similarly, the tax education clinics provided a comprehensive overview of Value Added Tax (VAT) and Withholding Tax, shedding light on their application, calculation, and reporting requirements. The URA teams emphasized the clarification of rules and regulations surrounding VAT and Withholding Tax, enabling businesses to make informed decisions.

For businesses engaged in international trade, the tax clinics addressed the critical aspects of Import Duty and Letters of Origin. Participants learned about the applicable tariffs, exemptions, and customs procedures related to imports.

They gained insights into the importance of Letters of Origin in determining the origin of goods and accessing preferential trade agreements, optimizing import operations while adhering to tax regulations.

In an increasingly digital age, the tax education clinics also recognized the significance of technology-driven solutions. Participants were introduced to the Digital Tax Stamp system, which aims to combat counterfeiting and ensures the traceability of certain goods.

Additionally, the clinics provided guidance on the proper filing of tax returns, emphasizing the importance of accuracy and timely submission. By equipping businesses with the necessary skills to leverage digital tools and fulfill their filing obligations.

The countrywide tax education clinics represent a significant step towards enhancing tax compliance and business knowledge in Uganda. By providing comprehensive training on various tax-related topics, businesses across the country have been empowered to navigate the taxation complexities effectively.

This initiative is expected to foster a culture of transparency, boost compliance rates, and facilitate the growth of the business sector in Uganda. The collaboration between UMA and URA in organizing these tax education clinics demonstrates a commitment to supporting businesses and improving the overall tax administration landscape in the country.
