by | Mar 20, 2023 | Communication

On March 2nd, 2023, Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) participated in the Makerere University Careers Fair at Freedom Square, where they announced their partnership with the university to provide job readiness training to recent graduates. The Access to Employment Project (ATE) is aimed at improving the employability status of youth with post-secondary / technical and higher education in Uganda.

Supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Employment and Skills for Development in Africa (E4D) Programme, the ATE project provides soft skill training to graduates, including Transition from school to work, Financial Literacy, Self-employment, Occupational Health and Safety, and Gender Competencies.

UMA is also creating internship opportunities with its member companies for students to gain practical skills and workplace exposure. This enhances students’ chances of finding decent and gainful employment. The project has already placed 531 interns in various member companies, achieving 88.5% of the target.

During the Makerere University Careers Fair, UMA informed the student finalists about the ATE project and its benefits. By the end of the 1-year project, it is anticipated that 750 graduates, 35% of whom are female, would have attained decent jobs.

UMA is committed to maintaining quality internship standards and conducts regular support supervision of interns placed in workplaces. They also train workplace supervisors to ensure quality internship standards are maintained.

This partnership between UMA and Makerere University is a step towards improving the employability status of youth in Uganda. Graduates who receive job readiness training and practical skills will be better equipped to find decent jobs in the country.
